In October 1981, a national "Day of Unity" began to unite advocates working to end domestic violence. The Day of Unity grew into a national movement that is now celebrated throughout October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2025 theme is
"With Survivors, Always."

This theme emphasizes the importance of partnership with survivors for safety, support, and solidarity. It calls for advocacy that considers all aspects of safety, including physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial support, and highlights
the ongoing journey of survivors as they
navigate trauma and new threats to their safety.
